‘HR will need to develop deeper business skills if it is to ensure it can continue to be relevant’

Fit for the Future: rethinking the role of the HR director

HR directors are in the front line when companies face uncertain times. In the face of today’s renewed economic turbulence they are having to rethink their roles to ensure they are focused on helping their businesses manage the challenges ahead.

To gain the insights of HR directors into these challenges, PA interviewed delegates at the CRF annual conference in Rome in early October. We asked them how they think HR will respond to the current economic situation and how the function might evolve and develop over the next 3-5 years.

Our interviewees raised a number of important themes:

  • HR will have to show that it is relevant to the business by aligning itself more closely with business priorities

  • it will have a role to play in shaping new leadership models and styles to suit the more difficult business environment

  • a more global perspective will be increasingly important.
