Recent research by PA indicates that the longest recession in British history has had a perceptibly draining influence on all areas of personal and working life - resulting in a half-alive, half-dead workforce, and a corresponding drop in individual and business performance.
A study by the Corporate Leadership Council has also found that only 4% of employees exhibit the highest levels of engagement - and that 20% of workers may actually be disengaged.
Fundamental action is required to regenerate and revive this zombie workforce, and the recently published McLeod Review on employee engagement may provide the answers. The Review responded with an unequivocal 'yes' to the question they were posed - could a wider take up of engagement approaches have a positive impact on UK competitiveness and performance as part of the country’s efforts to come through the current economic difficulties. The report stated that:
"...if employee engagement and the principles that lie behind it were more widely understood, if good practice was more widely shared, if the potential that resides in the country’s workforce was more fully unleashed, we could see a step change in workplace performance and in employee well-being, for the considerable benefit of UK plc."
This indicates that using employee engagement initiatives to build morale and commitment can unleash discretionary effort and lead to an improvement in business performance.
