Project portfolio delivery performance: what really makes a difference?
PA Consulting Group publishes new survey results on the drivers of project portfolio delivery performance
PA Consulting Group (PA) has collected survey data from over 150 organisations to assess best practice in high performing organisations and compare how these organisations distinguish themselves from lower performing counterparts.
The survey includes insights into what is the best delivery model for effective projects and what elements are critical for an organisation looking to improve their performance – offering a simple way to diagnose an organisation’s current state while providing a road map for future success.
Our analysis has shown that:
-
While maturity is a key driver, the complexity and culture of an organisation plays a part in its ability to deliver effectively, as do the capabilities of its people
-
Practice domains, ranging from governance through project, resource and design authority practices, can contribute to - or impede - overall delivery performance, but not all to the same extent
-
Consistency across practice domains is key – these are highly interdependent practices and vulnerable to the weakest link in the delivery chain
-
Resource and financial management are key differentiators for effective organizations - these two areas lacked management focus in over half the respondent base
-
Organizations with non-centralized planning and delivery models appear to deliver superior results to their centralised counterparts.
With our still growing databank of responses, we can benchmark the delivery performance of organizations across multiple sectors in the United States and Europe.
