Drowning in data?

Improving service delivery through better use of information

Organisations are constantly under pressure to improve performance and service delivery, whether from their owners or shareholders in the private sector, or ministers and regulators in the public sector. Clearly, the effects of the recession will create a harder drive to generate value for either their shareholders or the delivery of public services. Jill Tremble, Andy Weaver and Ivan McConnell explore how organisations can make better use of data when looking closely at their inner workings to drive out efficiencies, drive down costs and raise performance.

Strategic priorities are shifting in response to the challenges of the new economic climate. In the public sector in particular, targets that have been set over the last few years and even the last year, will need to be revisited. However, change is never easy to achieve. Often there are many strategic objectives - especially in the public sector environment where objectives can be multi-layered. For example, being an over-riding department, a delivery body in its own right and a joint partnership arrangement. Having set their objectives, organisations also need to understand how they are performing in relation to those objectives and what changes they need to make in order to achieve their goals.
