In the period following the collapse of the steel industry in the 1980s, Sheffield experience challenging times and the City Council regularly had to operate within a state of financial crisis. Today, the City is reinvented and regenerated and the Council – a unitary authority serving more than half-a-million citizens – is a shining example of transformation. It has a four-star CPA rating and was the Local Government Association (LGA) Council of the year in 205. To achieve this dramatic turnaround, politicians and officers placed a relentless focus on improving front line services.
