North West Strategic Health Authority
Effectively capturing and presenting performance data
The new Board of the North West Strategic Health Authority (NWSHA) which oversees NHS spending of about £10 billion across 24 PCTs and 38 Acute and mental health hospitals had a problem with the information feeding the decisions about managing the NHS in the North West: to some key information was not available at all; some was presented to the Board in an oversimplified way devoid of context; and in other areas the Board was swamped by the volume of information and could not identify the critical issues.
PA Consulting Group and the SHA established a joint development team to work with the Board to identify the key decisions that needed to be made about the performance management of PCTs and Trusts. From this understanding we then developed an innovative dashboard designed to allow the Board to make many of the key comparisons across multiple performance metrics and all the organisations on single pages of related metrics.
