Sir, Even greater benefits will come when all the smart meters are linked into the emerging “smart grid”, using new technology and converging power with telecommunications. International experience with smart grids has shown that the cost savings can be substantial — up to 30 per cent can be achieved because the technology allows energy companies to manage their network business more efficiently. Consumers will also see big benefits through the ability to integrate all their internet, power, telephony and security services.
Rolling out smart meters is a very positive step by the Government, but the players in the industry must be encouraged to move quickly to the next stage to realise the long-term benefits for us all.
