Colm Reilly, head of the government practice at PA Consulting Group, is interviewed on the BBC One Ten O’Clock News. Colm is asked for his views on how UK local authorities can make efficiency savings in light of government spending cuts.
Colm is interviewed by Mark Easton, BBC Home Editor, in Liverpool as the City Council grapples with the challenge of finding savings of £91m.
Colm argues that the council can make significant savings through collaborative procurement and sharing the high cost of front and mid office services (such as customer contact centres, social care and benefits payment departments) with neighbouring local authorities.
Another route to achieving efficiency savings is adopting an innovative approach to delivering front line services. Merseyside Fire Service has been transformed from a service which puts out fires to one which prevents fires from happening. This has saved significant running costs as a consequence. Given the significant budget challenges facing local authorities, they will need to think innovatively about how alternative approaches to delivery can happen.
