PA Consulting Group’s IT expert Scott Lever spoke to InfoWorld about how IT professionals can make themselves indispensable.
Scott notes that talent management is a major challenge in the IT organisation. His tips for IT professionals to be indispensable relate to putting yourself at a critical interface.
In the article, Scott is quoted on the data interface, saying: "IT people who can make sense of business data, safely store it, categorise it, retrieve it, and especially analyse it are highly valuable. These are the people who are using customer data to help drive business decisions."
Additional tips from Scott on being indispensable in the IT organisation are:
- The business interface. IT people who can and do translate business needs into winning technology solutions are in a good position. Deep business and technology capabilities are necessary, as is the ability to work at a senior level with business side internal customers.
- The vendor interface. A lot of IT delivery is outsourced. IT staff who can effectively work at the vendor interface deliver significant value to the enterprise. They can solve problems, anticipate challenges, and get the most out of your vendors.
- The technology interface. IT people who are able to integrate and architect cutting edge technology into viable business solutions have an important role. These are the people who are scouting over the horizon and possess a deep technology understanding, plus the rare ability to synthesise it.
