This article in the Financial Times Digital Business report looks at the growing importance of broadband on business and the growing gap in quality between countries. While a top tier of countries is "ready for tomorrow" and set to take advantage of high-speed digital connections, others, including the UK, are in a third tier who are "meeting the needs of today’s applications". Tim Devine and Phil Irvine, communications experts at PA Consulting Group, are quoted in the article.
Phil Irvine comments on the economic importance of IT connectivity. Phil says there is a general belief that economies can be boosted by high quality infrastructure: "Much of that comes from the enablement of business services through IT connectivity and if you do not have that you are economically disadvantaged."
Tim Devine talks about the importance of broadband quality on a businesses location. Tim comments: "Clearly, if your business is providing high-definition movies to cinemas then you simply can’t do it all unless you have a high-speed link.
"But you’re not going to move your corner shop to Singapore just because they’ve got incredible speeds that you might not need.
"What matters is that it’s increasingly difficult to do business in places with little or no connectivity. If you’re off the edge of the fast broadband map, that can leave your business behind the curve."
